To expedite the transfer of VMware Cloud workloads to Amazon EC2, Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced the AWS VMware Migration Accelerator (VMA). With the help of large incentives, AWS’s program aims to entice users of VMware Cloud on AWS with affordable migration.

Hock Tan, President and CEO of Broadcom responded in a blog article today to rumors that VMware Cloud on AWS will disappear from the market, now that AWS is offering a low-cost migration to Amazon EC2.

“Sadly, there have been unfounded rumors that VMware Cloud on AWS would be discontinuing, which is unnecessarily worrying our devoted customers who have been using the service for years,” said Hock Tan. “As Winston Churchill aptly observed, ‘A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.’ Therefore we are moving rapidly to correct this misinformation. I’m pleased to announce that the service is still operational, accessible, and supporting our clients’ strategic business ambitions as it always has.’d

“So, here’s what’s actually happening. AWS and its channel partners no longer sell VMware Cloud on AWS directly. It really is that simple. This means that in order to extend their environments and renew their subscriptions, clients who previously bought VMware Cloud on AWS from AWS will now interact with Broadcom or an approved Broadcom reseller. AWS will continue to bill customers who have active one- or three-year subscriptions that require monthly payments until the conclusion of their term.”

Large Incentives to Migrate to Amazon EC2

“Sadly, there have been unfounded rumors that VMware Cloud on AWS would be discontinuing,” said Hock Tan, President and CEO of Broadcom.Meanwhile, AWS is attempting to lure clients away from VMware on AWS and toward Amazon EC2 by providing substantial incentives. Customers of VMware Cloud who migrate their virtual machines (VMs) to Amazon EC2 can receive promotional credits from AWS until December 31, 2024.

AWS offers up to $400 in credits per virtual machine (VM) for clients who migrate more than 80 VMs in a single month. There is a $200 credit limit per virtual machine (VM) for those who move between 40 and 79 VMs per month. The moved virtual machines must operate on AWS for 720 hours or more following migration in order to be eligible.

With the exception of Amazon EC2 T2 and T3 instances, these credits are good for any metered AWS service and have a one-year expiration date.

By offering promotional credits and advice to mitigate the costs involved with maintaining parallel environments during the shift, the AWS VMA program seeks to streamline the migration process by rehosting VMware Cloud on AWS workloads on Amazon EC2 without requiring major reconfiguration by utilizing AWS Application Migration Service.

AWS offers a separate Migration Acceleration Program for companies wishing to transition from on-premises deployments or other cloud platforms like Azure, Google Cloud Platform, or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
